What Our Switchboard Upgrade Work Covers

Swapping a board isn't just unbolting one box and bolting up another.

Every finished board runs modern circuit breakers instead of fuses, wired with safety switches on every circuit that needs one. Labelling gets redone properly too, so the switch marked "kitchen" actually cuts power to the kitchen.

Where the meter box itself is cramped or awkwardly laid out, we tidy that up as part of the same job rather than leaving it half-done. And if the old board turns up wiring that isn't compliant once it's opened, that gets fixed then and there rather than left for someone else to find later.

We size the new board for what the house needs today, plus reasonable headroom for whatever gets added down the track, an EV charger or extra circuits included.

When It Is Time for a Switchboard Upgrade

A board in trouble rarely sends an obvious warning, so these are the clues worth watching for.

  • Trips or blown fuses that keep happening without an obvious reason
  • Fuses in the board where a breaker should be doing the job
  • Not one circuit on the board has a safety switch protecting it
  • A new appliance or a renovation is about to push the board past what it can handle
  • The board itself looking cracked, discoloured or scorched anywhere close to the fuses
  • You're adding an EV charger and need to know the board can actually take it

A board doing any of this is usually also behind a breaker that won't stop tripping somewhere in the house.

Switchboard Upgrades in Normanhurst Homes

A lot of Normanhurst's original boards have simply never been asked to do less than what's on them today.

Nobody plans to run a board past its limit. It happens gradually: an appliance added one year, a circuit added another, until years of small additions have quietly stacked up on hardware from a different decade.

Houses near Dartford Road that have stayed with the same family for a generation or more are where this shows up most, since nobody's ever had a reason to open the board and look closely.

Solar, an EV charger, or anything running off ducted power tends to be the moment that finally forces a proper capacity check, rather than another patch.

Switchboard Upgrades Pricing: What Moves the Quote

A few real variables decide what a switchboard job costs, not a flat rate per board.

  • How many circuits the new board needs to carry once it's finished
  • Fitting safety switches where none exist versus upgrading ones that are already there
  • How much room the meter box gives us to actually work in
  • Extra capacity you want built in for later, solar or an EV charger included
  • Whatever turns up as non-compliant once the old board's opened

Everything is written down before a single fuse comes out, and a first booking with us takes $50 off that number.

How it works

The Process, and What It Typically Takes

1

Describe the Board

A quick chat about the symptoms you're seeing gives us a first sense of the job before anyone drives out.

2

We Look and Quote

Seeing the board and meter box in person turns that first estimate into a fixed number on paper.

3

Out With the Old, In With the New

We isolate power safely, remove the old unit, and build the new board in one circuit at a time.

4

Proven and Handed Over

Every circuit gets tested, safety switches included, with the paperwork in your hands before we leave.

A straightforward domestic swap is usually wrapped up in a day. Genuinely tangled or undocumented wiring can push that out, something we'd rather mention when we quote than spring on you mid-job.

Compliance, Certificates and NSW Requirements

Every switchboard job answers to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules, and it counts as notifiable work without exception.

Once testing's done, a Certificate of Compliance gets lodged and a copy is yours to keep with the rest of the paperwork.

A safety switch belongs on every circuit in a modern board, full stop. Working on a live switchboard without a licence is against NSW law, whatever confidence a YouTube video might give someone.

The Difference on a Switchboard Upgrade Job

Cutting corners on switchgear is the one shortcut we won't take, because every other circuit in the house answers to this board.

A quick swap gets exactly the same brands, the same care and the same guarantee as a rebuild involving a dozen fresh circuits.

That's deliberate. The board you never look at is exactly the one that has to work every single time.

Servicing Nearby Homes Too

A new board frees up capacity for extra power points, and sometimes it exposes cable behind it old enough to justify a proper house rewiring too.

Board work is a regular part of our week across Normanhurst, Hornsby, Waitara and Beecroft.

Common questions

Switchboard Upgrades FAQs

What warranty comes with a switchboard upgrade?

Our labour is guaranteed permanently, and the switchgear itself carries an extra 12 months beyond the maker's cover. Should a fault ever point back to our workmanship, putting it right costs you nothing.

Do you supply the materials or can I buy my own?

We supply the switchgear as standard, always from brands built to last. This is one part of the job where going cheap on parts costs more later, not less.

Do you handle strata or apartment switchboards in Normanhurst?

Yes, including shared boards and metering setups. We coordinate timing with the building manager so residents aren't left without power longer than needed.

What brands do you install for switchboard upgrades?

Clipsal and Hager, both proven brands rather than whatever's cheapest that week. We fit what we'd be happy to have on our own board at home.

Can a switchboard upgrade be done without turning off power all day?

Most domestic upgrades only need power off for part of the day, not the whole thing. We plan the isolation window and let you know what to expect on the day.

What are the signs I need a switchboard upgrade?

Trips that keep happening, ceramic fuses still doing the job of a breaker, or no safety switch anywhere on the board. On their own or together, they're reason enough to get it checked.
